DONATIONS
Teaching Hospital Jaffna is a state facility which provides almost all patient care services, free of charge utilizing funds provided by the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka. As a tertiary level health institution, it caters for the healthcare needs of the entire Northern Province and parts of Eastern Province. Even though it serves as a health resort for war torn and underprivileged population, any Sri Lankan citizen may step into this hospital seeking medical attention at no cost.
We strive hard to uphold high standards of patient care. But we are unable to ensure uninterrupted multi prong service delivery due to resource constraints. Generous donations from various donors have helped us to revive many services in the past. We are looking forward to obtaining similar generosity in future as well. Any contribution by any means will be appreciated and acknowledged formally. All items received as donations will be incorporated into inventory as per regulations of Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka, for audit purposes. Donations received will be used in a sustainable manner ensuring transparency and accountability.
You can make a general donation in a way to continue a clinical service or uplift patient welfare. However, you may donate for a specific project (Eg: building maternity ward complex), purchasing specific equipment (newborn resuscitation machine) or system development (online appointment booking system). You may contact the Director’s Office, Teaching Hospital, Jaffna for information regarding specific areas identified for development.
We hereby declare that we have not appointed any external entity or individuals to coordinate or promote donations to our hospital. In case of such suspicious activities please contact our hospital directly via 021 222 2261 ext 230 for clarification, complaints or notification.

Regulated Items
Medicines, medical equipment, and reagents are strictly regulated by the National Medicinal Regulatory Authority (NMRA) of Sri Lanka. Donated items should have NMRA registration. If an item does not have NMRA approval, a request for waiver of registration should be submitted to the NMRA through the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka.
If you prefer to purchase regulated items locally, please purchase from NMRA registered suppliers. For medicines and reagents, it is preferable to have an acceptable duration of shelf life. We kindly request all to avoid purchasing medicines that are closer to their expiry dates. For medical equipment it is ideal to have a warranty and service agreement from a locally registered supplier.
If you want to send any regulated item from your country of residence, please contact Director’s Office, Teaching Hospital, Jaffna for guidance and support. For medicines it is advisable to donate brands which are registered with NMRA. For equipment, obtaining waiver of registration from NMRA if registration is not available, getting tax waived off from customs and clearance of courier are time consuming processes. Hence, we request you to mail us the following documents well ahead of transporting the items to prevent unnecessary payment of demurrage charges.
- Invoice
- Donation Letter indicating details of all donated items
- Quality Certificate
- Analytical or technical report (if any)
- Courier details
For equipment which is not registered with NMRA and competent local agents are not available, NMRA expects an acceptable plan for regular maintenance service, repair and supply of necessary spare parts.
For equipment, which is registered with NMRA, but brought into the country by a different party, NMRA expects a no objection letter from the registered local agent for regular maintenance service, repair and supply of necessary spare parts.
Items donated from abroad should be couriered to the Director General of Health Services, Ministry of Health Sri Lanka in favour of Director’s Office, Teaching Hospital, Jaffna.
(Please note that these protocols may be changed time to time depending on decisions made by the committee responsible for waiving of registration of a regulated item.)
We will email a letter of appreciation once the items are delivered by courier service.
